Match the rack to where the spices are: a tiered rack for a cupboard shelf, a screw-fixed rack for a pantry door, and a flat angled insert for a drawer. The test in every case is the same — can you read every label without moving anything? A tiered shelf rack achieves that with headroom; a door rack achieves it by putting everything in one plane and frees a whole shelf while doing it.

The door rack frees a whole shelf

This is the highest-return option and it is worth stating plainly: moving every spice jar to the inside of the pantry door recovers an entire shelf, puts every label at eye level in one plane, and removes the single messiest area of most pantries in one move.

The costs are real. You are drilling into the door, which is permanent. And the clearance measurement decides everything — the rack plus a jar must clear the shelf edges when the door closes. That measuring routine is on over-the-door pantry racks and it is the same one that governs every door product.

Jars: keep the ones you have, or replace them?

Keep them if the rack you are buying is a tiered shelf rack. It does not care about diameter and mixed jars are fine on steps.
Replace them if you are buying a door rack or a drawer insert. Both are sized for a standard jar diameter and mixed jars will not seat properly.
Label the lids if the spices go in a drawer. From above you see the lid, not the label on the side.
Do not decant into decorative jars unless they are opaque or the rack is away from light. Light degrades ground spices, which is why they are sold in dark or opaque packaging.

Should spices go in a drawer or a cupboard?
