Building a simple closet
An empty alcove and a rod is a two-hour job. Getting the four heights right first is what makes it a closet rather than a rail.

A simple closet is four heights and one span rule. Set the single rod at 66 to 68 inches, or a double hang at about 40 to 42 and 70 to 84. Put the shelf just above the rod. Keep shelf depth at 12 or 16 inches depending on whether a door panel eats the opening. And support the rod every 36 inches plus each end. Get those right and the build is a couple of hours; get the rod height wrong and you will live with it for years.

These are the published residential norms compiled on our reach-in dimensions page, not a building code. Your ceiling height and your own clothes both override them.
The double-hang decision is the one worth thinking hardest about, because it is where the capacity is. Two rods hold roughly twice as many garments as one, and the only thing they cannot take is a full-length coat. Most people have a handful of long garments and a great many shirts, which argues for double-hanging most of the run and leaving one short section single. Depth, and the measurement everyone gets wrong
A standard reach-in is 24 inches deep, and that number exists because a clothes hanger is 17 to 18 inches across the shoulders and needs the rod set about 12 inches out from the back wall to sit square.
Measure to the inside face of the closed door, not to the frame. On a bifold, a folded panel sits inside the opening and takes a couple of inches. On a sliding door, one panel is always across half the opening and can take four or more. This single mistake accounts for most of the shelving that arrives and does not fit, and it is why 12 inch and 16 inch shelf depths both exist — 16 for a standard closet, 12 where the door eats the opening.
The span rule
A hang rod deflects under load, and the fix is not a thicker rod but more supports. ClosetMaid publishes the spacing: a support every 36 inches of hang rod, plus one at each end of the shelf and rod. A 6 foot closet therefore wants an intermediate support, not just two ends.
Shelf spans follow the same logic through the bracket spacing instead. ClosetMaid's published limit is standards no more than 24 inches apart and no more than 4 inches from the end of the shelf. The published figures for every system, and the stud condition attached to each, are on shelf span and weight.
The order the work goes in
The steps above are numbered for a reason: several of them cannot be undone cheaply, and they are ordered so the irreversible ones come after the decisions that constrain them.
- Measure and mark before you buy. Depth, opening width, stud positions and ceiling height. All four change what you can buy.
- Decide the layout on paper. Single or double hang, how many shelves, where the tall section goes for long coats.
- Buy, then cut. Shelf stock is cut to the marked opening once the hardware is fitted, never to the raw wall measurement — the method is on cutting wire shelving.
- Fit hardware into studs. The published load figures assume this and stop describing your closet without it.
- Load last, and check in a week. Movement means a fixing missed.
When not to build at all
- You rent. Fixings into a landlord's wall are a deposit problem. Freestanding and no-drill options are on renter-friendly closet organizers.
- The wall is masonry or plaster over brick. Every published load rating in this category assumes wood studs. A freestanding rack publishes a far higher per-shelf figure and needs no wall at all.
- You are not sure of the layout. An adjustable track system lets you move shelves later without new holes, which is worth the small premium in any closet whose contents will change.
- The closet is already double hung with the floor in use. At that point you are not adding capacity, you are buying finish — which is a legitimate purchase, just a different one. The cost tiers are on what a closet system costs.
The shelf above the rod
Almost every closet gets one and almost nobody plans it, which is why it usually ends up as an unsorted heap. Two decisions make it useful.
Height. The shelf sits just above the rod, because the gap between rod and shelf is dead space — a garment on a hanger needs only an inch or two of clearance above the hook. Setting the shelf high to "leave room" wastes the most accessible storage in the closet.
Depth. Match it to the rod depth rather than making it deeper. A shelf deeper than the hanging below it is a shelf whose back you cannot see, and the contents will be forgotten. What actually belongs up there — boxed seasonal clothing, luggage, spare bedding — is set out on drawers vs shelves.
When the alcove is not square
Older houses rarely give you a rectangular opening, and the usual discovery is made after the shelf is cut. Three things to check before cutting anything:
- Measure the width at the back wall and at the opening. If they differ, cut to the smaller figure. A shelf cut to the wider measurement will not go in.
- Check the baseboard. It projects into the closet at floor level and it will stop a freestanding unit sitting flush against the back wall. It does not affect wall-hung shelving, which is one quiet argument for it.
- Check the walls for plumb with a level. A wall that leans means a rod that looks crooked even when it is level, and the fix is to split the difference visually rather than to chase the wall.
None of these stops the job. All of them cost money if you find them after cutting steel shelf stock to length.
How long it actually takes
A single rod and one shelf in a square alcove, with studs where you want them, is a couple of hours including measuring and tidying up. A double hang with two shelf runs and a cut on each is closer to half a day for someone doing it the first time.
The step people underestimate is not the drilling, it is the measuring and marking at the start — and it is the step where the mistakes get made. Budget more time before the drill comes out than after it, and stand back and look at the marked lines before you commit.
The mistakes worth naming in advance
- Cutting before the hardware is up. The shelf should be measured against fitted brackets, not against the raw wall. Walls are not square and brackets do not sit exactly where you marked them.
- Setting the rod by the ceiling instead of by the clothes. A rod at 66 to 68 inches is standard because garments hang from it, not because of where the ceiling is. Hang your longest coat and check its hem clears the floor.
- Forgetting the intermediate rod support on a run over 36 inches. This is the single most common cause of a rod that sags, and it is much easier to fit at build time than afterwards.
- Putting the top shelf too high. The gap between the rod and the shelf above it is dead space, and setting the shelf high to leave room wastes the most reachable storage you have.
- Drilling before standing back. A level line in the wrong place is still the wrong place. Mark it, walk away, look again.
None of these is a skill problem and all five are sequence problems, which is why the steps above are ordered the way they are.
