If you have a closet, buy ClosetMaid. If you need a closet, buy PAX. They are answers to different problems. ClosetMaid fits inside an existing cavity and adapts to its width by being cut. PAX is a freestanding wardrobe frame that creates enclosed storage in a room with no closet at all, and it comes in exactly two depths: 35 cm (13 3/4 in) and 58 cm (22 7/8 in). BOAXEL sits between them — IKEA's open wall-mounted system, cheaper than PAX and more configurable than a fixed wire kit.
The depth gap is the whole story
A hanger is 17 to 18 inches across. PAX's 58 cm frame is 22 7/8 inches, which holds one square with room to spare. Its 35 cm frame is 13 3/4 inches, which cannot hold a hanger front-to-back at all — that depth is intended for garments hung sideways on a pull-out rail.
There is nothing between those two figures. If your alcove is 18 inches deep, PAX has no answer and a cut-to-fit wire shelf does. That single fact decides this comparison more often than price, finish or anything else, and it is why the depths sit at the top of the table.
Where BOAXEL fits
BOAXEL is IKEA's rail-and-bracket system: open wall-mounted storage rather than a closed frame. It is substantially cheaper than PAX, more configurable than a fixed wire kit, and components hook in and out without tools once the rails are up.
The catch is the same one that applies to everything IKEA sells: it is IKEA-only, component availability is unpredictable, and load figures are published per component rather than as a system rating. Against ClosetMaid, which publishes a per-bracket and a per-system figure and is stocked everywhere, that is a real difference for anyone planning to add to the system later.
Assembly and time
- ClosetMaid wire: an afternoon, a drill, a stud finder, and possibly a hacksaw. The sequence is on installing wire shelving.
- PAX: substantial flat-pack assembly, heavy frames, and a second person for standing them up. Then doors, then interior fittings.
- BOAXEL: rails on the wall, then components hook in. Faster than PAX, slower than a wire kit.
The verdict, by situation
- Existing closet, standard 24 in depth: ClosetMaid. Cheaper, adapts to the width, published load data, available anywhere.
- No closet in the room: PAX, if you have floor for the 58 cm frame. It is the only one of the three that creates enclosed storage from nothing.
