A rechargeable motion-sensor bar is the best default, because a closet light should come on when you open the door and your hands are full. Battery puck lights are the pick if you want light in several specific spots rather than one; an LED strip is the only option that lights a long run evenly, and it is the only one that needs a socket.

The trade nobody mentions: brightness versus batteries

Battery fittings are dim, and they are dim for a reason — output and runtime trade directly against each other. A brighter battery light is a light you recharge every week, which you will stop doing by the second month.

The practical consequence is about color rather than quantity. Low-output LED fittings tend to render color poorly, and the everyday cost of that is standing in a closet unable to tell navy from black. If matching color matters to you, that is the argument for finding a socket and running a strip, or for accepting that you will carry the garment to the window.

Mounting, in the right place

Under the shelf, facing down. The single best position. It lights the hanging rail and the floor beneath it, which is where you are looking.
On the inside of the door frame, facing in. Best for a motion bar, because it sees you arrive.
Not on the ceiling above the shelf. The shelf shades everything below it and you have lit the top of the shelf.
Not behind the hanging clothes. They block it entirely once the rod is full.
