Closet vs dresser
The question is not which you prefer. It is which garments are damaged by the alternative.
Hang anything with a structured shoulder or a hem that creases; fold anything knitted. Suits, jackets, shirts, dresses and coats hang. Jumpers, t-shirts, jeans, underwear and anything knitted goes in a drawer, because a knit hung on a hanger stretches under its own weight at the shoulder and does not recover. This is a garment question, not a storage-preference question, which is why almost every bedroom needs both.
The commercial version of the question — buy a dresser or fit more hanging — has a clean answer once you sort the wardrobe by garment type. Do that first and the amount of each you need becomes obvious.

Garment-care conventions, not manufacturer specifications. The shoulder-stretch problem with knits is the one that is genuinely irreversible.
The floor area a dresser costs
A dresser occupies floor and needs clear space in front of it to open a drawer. A six-drawer dresser is typically 30 to 36 inches wide and 18 inches deep, plus roughly 24 inches of pull-out clearance in front — call it 9 square feet of bedroom that has to stay empty.
Drawers inside the closet cost none of that, because the closet floor was already unusable for anything else. That is the argument for a tower with drawers inside the closet instead of a dresser in the room, and it is a strong one in a small bedroom. The counter-argument is that a closet tower takes hanging width, which you may need more.
If you are choosing one
Prioritize hanging if
- You wear structured clothing — suits, jackets, shirts — most days.
- The room is small and every square foot of floor is spoken for.
- You already have a closet and it is under-used above and below the single rod.
Prioritize drawers if
- Your wardrobe is mostly knitwear, t-shirts and jeans, which should not be hanging anyway.
- You have closet width but no vertical space for double hang.
- The closet is deep and the floor of it is currently a heap — that is exactly where a drawer tower goes.

Should you hang or fold sweaters?
Fold. A knitted jumper hung on a hanger stretches at the shoulder under its own weight and does not recover — that is the permanent bump you see on old knitwear. Fold it flat, ideally with nothing heavy on top.

It depends on the garment. Structured items last longer hung because folding sets creases into the construction. Knits last longer folded because hanging stretches the shoulder permanently. Neither is universally better.
