Measure your largest shoe before you buy anything, because the size claims in this category contradict each other. The six boxes here are all between 13 and 13.5 inches long on the outside, and their stated maximum shoe sizes run from a men's US 9 to a men's US 13. For most adult collections the Kuject is the pick: it states a maximum size and a load, which almost nothing else does. For high-tops and larger feet, the Amllas is 8.3 inches tall and claims US 13. For children's shoes and flats, the Sterilite is the only box in the category that publishes an interior.

What the shell costs, using the only figures we have
Sterilite publishes both numbers for its 6 quart box: an exterior of 13 5/8 by 8 by 4 5/8 inches and an interior of 11 1/2 by 6 by 4. The shell eats about 2 1/8 inches of length and 2 inches of width.
That is one data point from one manufacturer, and it is not a category constant - a thinner-walled box loses less. But it is the only published pair in the category, and it tells you the direction and the rough scale. Apply it to a 13.4 inch box and the usable interior is nearer 11.5 inches than 13, which is where a men's 9 or 10 shoe sits rather than a 13.

The appeal of these boxes is a tidy column on a shelf. The problem with a column is the box at the bottom, and the designs here answer it in three different ways.
