Space linen closet shelves to the stack you actually fold, and use ventilated shelving. A folded bath towel stack of four or five is roughly 10 to 12 inches tall, so shelves closer than that force you to make more, shorter stacks, and shelves much further apart waste the difference. Why ventilated shelving belongs here
Linen goes into the closet warm from the dryer or slightly damp from the line more often than anyone admits, and on a solid shelf in a closed closet that moisture has nowhere to go. Wire shelving lets air move through the stack from below, which is precisely why it is standard in linen closets.

What goes where
Eye level: what you use weekly. Bath towels and current bed linen. This is the most valuable shelf in the closet and it should hold the most-used item, not the prettiest.
Above eye level: light and occasional. Spare pillows, guest linen. Keep it light — anything heavy above shoulder height is a hazard coming down.
Below eye level: heavy and bulky. Duvets, spare blankets, anything you would rather not lift down.
