# Bin & Basket - full reference > Closet and pantry storage, from a single shelf to a full system. Published > dimensions, spans and load ratings compiled from manufacturer documentation, > with the fit arithmetic shown, plus live retailer prices. Site: https://binandbasket.com Contact: info@binandbasket.com Published by: Slate Mill Group (https://slatemillgroup.com) Author: Scooter M. Scope: closets and pantries only. No garage, bathroom, or general home organization content. ## What this publisher does and does not claim Bin & Basket does NOT test the products it recommends, and says so on every page. There is no test lab, no owned inventory and no staff. What it does instead: - Compiles specifications from the manufacturer's own installation manual or specification sheet, attributed by document name. Retailer listings are not accepted as a specification source. - Does the fit arithmetic in the open and shows the working. - Renders prices live from the retailer with a verification date. Where no live price exists the page says "check price" and shows no number. No price is ever written into the copy. - States a specific constraint that disqualifies every product it recommends. - Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, the page says "not published by the manufacturer" rather than estimating it. Author: Scooter M., an enthusiast. No credentials are claimed, no tenure is claimed, and no hands-on testing is claimed anywhere on the site. Funding: affiliate commission via the Amazon Associates programme, at no extra cost to the buyer. No free products, no sponsored placements, no paid inclusion, and commission rate does not affect rankings. Several recommended products (Elfa, IKEA, Everbilt) earn the site nothing at all and are labelled as such on the page. ## Method, in detail 1. COMPILE PUBLISHED SPECIFICATIONS from the manufacturer's own installation manual or specification sheet, cited by document name on the page. Retailer listings, other publishers' pages and memory are not acceptable sources. 2. DO THE FIT ARITHMETIC AND SHOW IT. Example: ClosetMaid specifies a rod support every 36 in, so a 72 in rod supported only at its ends spans 72 in unsupported - double the specification, and the reason it sags. 3. RENDER PRICES LIVE from the retailer, with a verification date. No price is written into the copy. Where no live price exists the page says "check price". 4. STATE THE DISQUALIFIER. Every product carries a specific "skip this if". 5. SCORES are editorial judgements about published specifications, not test results, and are never emitted as structured data. The site emits no Review, reviewRating or AggregateRating markup anywhere. "Prices verified" and "content updated" are separate fields on every page and are never conflated. ## Sections and every page in them ### Closet Systems Full closet builds: wire, wood and hybrid systems compared on published bracket spacing and load ratings. Source: standard US residential practice. - Single rod 66-68 in from the floor. Double hang: lower rod about 40-42 in, upper rod 70-84 in. A shirt or folded trouser occupies about 38 in from hook to hem, which is why 84 in of internal height makes double hang marginal. - Rod set about 12 in out from the back wall so a 17-18 in hanger sits square. - Shelf above the rod: 10-12 in of clearance so a hanger lifts off vertically. CLOSET SHELVING LOAD - ClosetMaid ShelfTrack: about 83 lb per bracket, up to 1,000 lb per system. Standards no more than 24 in apart and no more than 4 in from the shelf end. Rated capacity requires at least 3 screws into studs in the hang track and 3 in the middle standards. Source: ClosetMaid ShelfTrack Installation Tips and ClosetMaid Wire Shelving Specifications rev 6/12. - ClosetMaid Maximum Load: up to 600 lb per 6 ft shelf. Same source. - ClosetMaid shelf depths: 12 in and 16 in across the wire ranges. SuperSlide rod support every 36 in plus each end. Source: ClosetMaid published product specifications. - Rubbermaid FastTrack rail: 1,750 lb. Rail must begin and end on a stud; a 48 in rail must hit 4 studs and an 84 in rail 6; anchors every 8 in between studs; maximum capacity NOT achievable at 24 in stud spacing. Source: Rubbermaid FastTrack Rail and Shelving Installation Guide. - Elfa Classic: 200 kg (about 440 lb) per section; wire and click-in melamine shelves up to 40 kg (about 88 lb) each. Studs not required but increase capacity; top-track holes are oval to improve the chance of catching one. Source: elfa.com Weight and security; Elfa installation instructions. - Freestanding NSF wire rack: up to 800 lb per shelf, up to 4,000 lb per unit, no stud requirement, because load goes through the posts into the floor. Source: Seville Classics UltraDurable product specification. PANTRY - Shelf depth 12-16 in; 12 in is best for cans, boxed food and organizers. Beyond about 16 in you store food behind food. Source: Dimensions.com pantry storage depths. - Shelf spacing: about 7 in for canned goods (a can is 4-5 in tall); common bands for mixed groceries are 7-10 in and 12-14 in; cereal boxes need 12-14 in. Source: Dimensions.com pantry storage heights. - OXO POP published container dimensions include: Mini Square Short 0.5 qt at 3.1 x 3.1 x 6.7 in; Small Square Medium 1.7 qt at 4.1 x 4.1 x 9.8 in; Rectangle Medium 2.7 qt at 6.5 x 4.3 x 9.5 in; Small Square Tall 2.3 qt at 4.1 x 4.1 x 13 in. Source: oxo.com product pages. WARDROBES - IKEA PAX frames: widths 50, 75 and 100 cm; heights 201 and 236 cm; two depths only, 35 cm (13 3/4 in) and 58 cm (22 7/8 in). The 35 cm frame cannot hold a standard hanger front to back. Source: IKEA PAX product specifications. PANTRY MOTHS (Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella) - A single female can lay up to about 400 eggs; they hatch in roughly a week. - 5 to 7 larval instars; development approximately 14 to 90+ days depending on temperature. - Larvae chew through thin cardboard and plastic bags, and exploit imperfect seals and folds. They CANNOT chew through rigid plastic, glass or metal, which is why rigid airtight containers are the control that works. - Sources: University of Maryland Extension "Indian Meal Moth"; Colorado State University Agricultural Biology; National Pesticide Information Center. ## Common questions this site answers - What is the standard depth of a reach-in closet? 24 inches. - How high should a closet rod be? 66-68 in single; 40-42 and 70-84 double hang. - Why does my closet rod sag?
